Newman is proud to announce that the school has once again achieved Gold status in the OPHEA Healthy Schools Certification for the 2024/2025 school year. This prestigious recognition celebrates the school’s ongoing commitment to student health, wellness, and community well-being.
The OPHEA Healthy Schools Certification is an evidence-based program that guides schools through the 4-Step Healthy Schools Process, encouraging schools to address priority health topics based on their own needs and strengths. This year’s success was made possible with support from Ever Active Schools, Ophea, and PHE Canada, key members of the Canadian Healthy Schools Alliance.
At the heart of this accomplishment are the efforts of over 100 students from the Health and Wellness and Peer Mentor groups. Their dedication and collaboration have led to the implementation of meaningful initiatives that promote a healthier school environment. These student-led programs have had a positive and lasting impact on the entire school community.
A core group of student leaders deserves special recognition for going above and beyond. These students not only took on leadership roles but also successfully applied for and secured federal grants to support wellness initiatives. Their ability to plan, organize, and lead activities aligned with the Healthy Schools framework demonstrates both initiative and passion for making a difference.
The Gold certification is also a result of the incredible support shown by both staff and students throughout the school. Whether through volunteering, attending events, or encouraging wellness practices, the entire Newman community has contributed to creating a culture focused on health and well-being.
A heartfelt thank-you goes out to the school’s administration team, whose continued support is instrumental in bringing student ideas to life. Their openness to collaboration and dedication to student success ensures that health and wellness remain a priority at Newman.
On behalf of the Health and Wellness and Peer Mentor teams—Carol Fedoryshyn, Ashley Lovnicki, Anna Piccoli, and Halina Salciccioli—congratulations to the entire Newman community. Together, we will continue to build a stronger, healthier school for everyone.
